On Sunday April 28th at 3 PM, at Shed and Silo Country Restaurant, Magdalena de Vries, South Africa’s most distinguished classical marimbist and Jannie le Roux will perform a selection of music that we could only call our “Favourite Favourites”.
We invite you to experience Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Mozart’s Alleluia, Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, and much more in this unique arrangement for marimba and piano.
Hearing the music we know and love in this arrangement showcases Magdalena de Vries’s unparalleled virtuosity and presents the music in a new light, reminding us of its beauty and genius. An alumnus of the prestigious Tokyo College of Music, where Magdalena de Vries studied under Professor Atsushi Sugahara, Magdalena de Vries has performed in Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and Azerbaijan.
She is a sought-after orchestral percussionist and soloist at home and abroad and collaborates extensively with contemporary music ensembles. As a champion of new music, Magdalena has commissioned numerous works for marimba from South Africa’s leading contemporary composers, including Peter Klatzow, Alan Stephenson, Andile Khumalo, and Hendrik Hofmeyr, to name only a few. She is featured on the albums of a wide variety of artists, including Claire Johnston (Mango Groove), Denzil Weale (top-rated jazz pianist), and Ockie Vermeulen (award-winning organist), amongst others. She is the only Marimba One (TM) endorsed artist on the African continent and works tirelessly to promote the marimba as a fully-fledged solo instrument by commissioning South African composers to compose new works for the instrument.
Jannie le Roux completed his master’s in piano studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas and his Doctorate at the University of Pretoria. Jannie has performed as a soloist with the Cape Town Philharmonic, the University of Pretoria Symphony, the Unisa Music Foundation Symphony, the Gauteng Philharmonic, and the Varna Philharmonic Orchestra in Bulgaria. As a chamber musician, he has collaborated with Zanta Hofmeyr, Wessel van Wyk, Cho-Liang Lin, Hanli Stapela, and Magdalena de Vries. Jannie teaches at the University of Pretoria and Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool in Pretoria.
This is a rare opportunity to hear South Africa’s foremost classic marimbaist perform some of the world’s most beautiful music in a way you have never heard before. If you want to enjoy a delectable lunch at Shed and Silo Country Restaurant before the concert, we highly recommend making a reservation.
