Voices of Memory - Music for Mezzo-Soprano, Cello, and Piano

Aukse Trinkunas (mezzo soprano), Gerrit Koorsen (cello), and Paul Ferreira (piano) present music for mezzo-soprano, cello, and piano.

It is surprising that over the centuries comparatively little has been written for the combination of solo voice, cello and piano. Cellist Steven Isserlis said of the instrument, “Even physically, one’s relationship to it is somehow similar to a singer with his or her voice; the cello seems to become part of one’s body, as one hugs it close and coaxes mellow sounds from it”. Join this rare trio as they journey around the world celebrating the beauty and emotional expression of three unique tone colours. This program brings together the lush colors of the mezzo-soprano voice, the expressive depth of the cello, and the versatility of the piano in a dialogue across cultures and generations. Featuring works by the Catalan composer X. Montsalvatge, South African composer H. Hofmeyr, J.Brahms, G.Fauré, the concert highlights themes of longing, nostalgia, and identity, while the cello repertoire provides resonant interludes that echo and expand upon these ideas.
