On Sunday, March 17th at 3PM, we welcome to Shed and Silo Country Restaurant the renowned South African baritone Christian Bester and pianist Eugene Joubert, presenting Let Every Heart Sing.
Each of the song cycles and arias selected for Let Every Heart Sing express the fascination, obsession, and longing of the human spirit to feel love. Schubert’s set of “Harfenspieler” songs (Songs of the Harper), based on texts from Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister, are beautifully intimate settings, very reflective and somber in nature. In his novel, Goethe writes of the character of the harper’s songs – sometimes chanted, sometimes in recitative – and Schubert’s music illuminates the text beautifully. In contrast, Korngold’s “Sechs einfache lieder” are anything but simple, capturing what was to become the composer’s mature musical style from the pen of a fourteen-year-old. The yearning quality of Korngold’s melodic writing are captured quite remarkably in the songs “Liebesbriefchen” and “Sommer”.
For their upcoming recital at Shed and Silo Country Restaurant, Bester and Joubert will be presenting songs and song cycles by Schubert, Meyerbeer and Korngold, in addition to arias by Mozart, Léhar, Lortzing. A particularly beautiful aria to look forward to, is “Pierrot’s Tanzlied” from Korngold’s well-known opera, “Die Tote Stadt”.
Having graduated from the TUT Department of Vocal Arts in Pretoria, Bester travelled to the USA where he received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree and Artist Diploma in Vocal Performance from the University of North-Texas. In addition to being Artistic Director for Voces Intimae – The Art Song in Dallas, he currently serves as Assistant Professor of Voice at Northeastern State University, Oklahoma. Joubert graduated with a Master of Music degree in Collaborative Piano from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston, and frequently appears as collaborator with singers and instrumentalists alike.
We highly recommend a pre-concert lunch at the Shed and Silo restaurant, but we can assure you, booking is essential. We cannot wait for you to join us at Shed and Silo Country Restaurant at 77 Thomas Road in Norton’s Home Estates, Benoni, on Sunday, March 17th, at 3PM for an afternoon of exquisite beauty in the company of the world’s most beautiful music.
